Make a colourful Spring picture collage to brighten up your school room or any wall. This collage is so easy to make and kids can fun while developing fine motor skills by tearing, cutting, painting and at the same time, exploring textures.

Spring picture collage

You will need:

  • An old picture frame
  • Paper in different textures and colours
  • Small plastic containers like yogurt tubs
  • Wooden flowers (if you don’t have wooden flowers you can cut them out of cardboard)
  • Paper flowers or buttons
  • Sisal
  • Green craft sticks
  • Green felt
  • Pillow stuffing
  • Small butterflies
  • Glue
  • Modge Podge

Tip – If you do not have podge, use dilute wood glue 1/3 part glue to 2/3 water and mix well.

What to do:

Take the old picture and frame it apart and clean off all the dust. Let the kids tear wide strips of paper in different shades of blue and green. We used crepe paper, I love the texture of crepe paper and it works really well for layering. Paint a generous layer of podge where the sky area will be.

Spring Picture background

Layer the strips of crepe paper on top of the podge and paint a thin layer of podge over the paper. Working from the top, repeat the process with the lighter shade of blue and green. You may need more than one layer of paper, if you are using crepe paper especially, to get an even background.

While your background is drying, paint or cover the picture frame with paper. To cover with paper, paint the podge onto the frame and use strips of thin paper to cover. Thin paper works much easier for frames to bend around the frame and get into the corners. Remember to paint a layer of podge over your paper as well.

Now to make the flowers and pots. Cut your yogurt containers in half, lengthwise, and cover with paper using the same method as for the picture frame. Cover your wooden flowers with paper or paint them.

Flower pots prep

Glue your pots to the background and insert your flowers. Cut thin felt strips and twist at the bottom to make the grass.

Glue a bit of stuffing in the sky area of your background to form clouds. Glue your wooden flowers to the craft sticks and add a few felt or cardboard leaves. Use a smaller paper flower or button in the middle of your flower.

Flowers in pots and clouds

“Plant” your flowers in the pots, glue the “grass” in between the pots. Round your project off with some butterflies in the sky and green sisal in and around your pots.
