I usually make keepsakes from salt dough(see this Earth Day Keepsake and this Easter Keepsake), but I recently discovered fabulous air drying clay which is perfect for a more durable and lighter keepsake. This keyring keepsake called for a durable material.
Material we used:
- Light and Dark Pink Air Drying Clay
- Small photo
- Knife
- Bottle top
- Bamboo stick
- String
First it was flattened and a bottle top was used to mark where the photo will be. Then my daughter pressed her finger all around the bottle lid to form the flower petals. (Unfortunately the clay does not preserve the fingerprints as clearly as salt dough.)
I cut the flower shape with the knife(you could use a cookie cutter instead) and added the photo immediately. As the clay dries, it shrinks just a tiny bit and that keeps the photo in place. (You could place two photos back to back as well.) A hole was made with the stick for the string to go through:
She mixed the dark and light pink clay together and rolled balls. Holes were made to form beads, using the stick. We left the flower and the beads for a few(about three) hours to air dry.
Lastly, it was a threaded on a white string and attached to a keyring. PS: Add the date at the back of the photo to remember the year.
A pretty, and useful keepsake gift made from air drying clay!
