Turn an old dart box into a family organization station! A great upcycling project to help your family to be more organized!

From To

This project was long-awaited! I saved this old dart box from ending up in the dumps, but it stood in our garage for almost a year before I decided to turn it into something awesome: a family organization station!

My kids both started at new schools(two different ones) and I started a new part-time job, so I needed something to help me keep track of things I need to do, buy etc. Time to get more organized, and to get things off the counter too. PS: Have you seen this Craft Station?

Here is what I did:

Firstly I had to take it apart and sand it.

Then I painted the outside doors with blackboard paint.

On the inside of the box, I added cork. The cork was not thick enough for a thumbnail to stick properly, so I cut an old piece of foam mat, added that first, and then the cork.

Cork inside

The paint I chose was a teal and a mint shade. They worked so well together! I painted around the box, and sanded the edges just a tiny bit so it looked rough, covering up the uneven painting that inevidently happened!

The inside doors already had blackboards, which I just gave a new coat of paint. Around the boards I painted a coat of teal color, using tape to help me not to get paint on the boards.

Then, the tape was used to make the stripes with the mint color. This was quite tricky, getting the gradient right. I used a ruler for that, although I’m sure there must be another way since it did not come out perfect.

Mint stripes

Here is how it looked with the tape resist technique, I just loved how it came out!

My friend(thanks Kari!) at Lovilee made the vinyl stickers for me, per instruction. It is in Afrikaans, but here is the translations:

Inkopielys– Shopping list
Doenlys– To-Do List
Onthou– Remember

Oh, and I added a little strip of Washi tape at the bottom of the blackboards because I love bicycles!

With vinyl stickers

I added rope along the inside of the box on the cork, just to finish it off, and also added a piece of rope with blackboard pegs to hang up some important letters etc. I added clips attached to thumbnails, and one can use thumbnails too. I downloaded a free printable calendar from Today’s Creative Blog, which I fill in with colored pens, one color for each family member.

Small tin buckets are attached with screws, to keep pens and chalk in.

Finished

I’m really happy with how this upcycled organization station project turned out! What do you think?
