I have been “cooking” up something for a while now…A recipe book! But not just any recipe book, a SmulSouth African recipe book! 35 South African recipes to feast on!

As a SAFFA(South African Far From Africa), it brings me great pleasure to make our traditional recipes part of our newly-adopted culture. It brings back memories of days long past and the nostalgia associated with that brings me joy. Perhaps you are a SAFFA as well, and I hope you will find joy when you try these recipes. If not a SAFFA, simply enjoy this authentic South African recipe book with a hint of history and culture snippets sprinkled in.

Side-note: You might find that some of these recipes were adopted and adapted from other countries, much like our Afrikaans heritage is a blend of a few cultures. What makes the recipes uniquely South African is not simply the ingredients of the recipe, but the history and the memories associated. I often tell the stories to my own kids of Ouma(granny) baking these treats, as a way to keep our Afrikaans legacy alive.
You will find Sweet and Savoury recipes in this book including:
- Melkkos
- Pannekoek
- Malva Pudding
- Pampoenkoekies(pumpkin fritters)
- Vetkoek
- Oxtail Potjie
- Biltong Sticks and more!
Some of my family’s favourite recipes are included and also traditional recipes. There are many more and perhaps there will be a Smul Edition 2…

I’ve added a snippet of the history or origin of each recipe for interest’s sake. Some of the recipes have Afrikaans names and I have tried to translate those as close as possible.

A special thanks to my mother Linda, you were my first(patient) teacher in the kitchen and provided a lifetime of happy memories. Dankie Mams!

Smul, and feast on these South African recipes to make your own memories and to expand your international food experiences!
