Remember the fun crack the code activity with CVC words? Here are 2 similar resources, one for CVCC(consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) words and one for CCVC(consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant) words!

Use initial, or beginning, sound knowledge to crack the code to find the secret word.

Then, read and draw the word!

The ability to hear the initial sound(medial and ending too) in a word is very important for early readers. This is called phonemic awareness.

Phonemic awareness(one of the building blocks for reading) is at play here. Then, segmenting, or breaking the word up into individual sounds, helps a child to spell a word by decoding the sounds in the word. Knowledge of phonemes(sounds) and graphemes(written symbols) are practiced in this activity.
Making learning fun with activities like this crack the code, or secret words, is great for even your reluctant readers.
