Working on short vowels with your kindergarteners? Here is a NO-PREP short vowel cut & paste activity(It is FREE) that is great fun to use to revise those vowels!

Medial sounds like the short vowels in a CVC word are quite tricky to hear for some students. Unlike beginning sounds(the easiest one), and ending sounds, medial vowel sounds takes more effort to hear since it is squished in the middle of other sounds.
Breaking up words into their individual sounds are called segmenting and is part of the decoding strategy when learning to read.
Auditory perception is at play here. Students with auditory processing difficulties might find this even harder, so practice, practice and practice some more!

How to Prepare the activity:
Simply print the pages you need, provide scissors, glue and coloring utensils and you are ready! So easy! It is NO-PREP and low ink usage, bonus!
How to Use the Printables:
The students get extra cutting practice with these printables too! Let them cut the pictures one by one and paste it into the correct block on the vowels page.
Cutting one picture block at a time prevents it from getting lost;) This is the best way I have found to do the cutting:

Cut into strips first, but not all the way, then cut each picture individually out.

Kids that are proficient in cutting would easily be able to do this independently in a literacy centre setup as extra Word Work.

After pasting all the pictures in the correct blocks under the vowels, color in all the pictures!

A simple cut & paste activity but with so many educational benefits. Perfect to practice isolating and hearing those medial short vowel sounds making reading so much easier. Grab your free set on our Freebie page under the LITERACY category.
