Crack the code by using your beginning sound knowledge! A super fun “secret CVC word” activity that your early readers will love to solve, even the reluctant ones!

Early readers need to develop the skill to isolate sounds- phoneme manipulation. This is one of the building blocks for reading. When this skill is developed well, reading difficult words are easy.
Simply print these Crack the Code printables and it is ready to be used! You use it as it, or laminate to make it reusable.

Instructions to students: look at the first picture. What is it? What does it start with? Write down the first letter in the block underneath. Write down all the first sounds.

Then read the word. Can you draw your word? Adding a picture to the word does not only allow creativity, but gives the child a chance to personalise the worksheet in a way that he/she relates to that word. And we all know students learn best when they can relate to their learning!

My son loved this crack the code activity- it is almost like I could see his mind working to “crack it”! These I-Spy Beginning Sound Activities are also a favorite!
