Rhyming words or as some call it- word families, are great to get early readers to read words that almost sound the same. It helps with auditory discrimination and makes reading easier too! Here is robot rhyming mats for you to use with your early readers!

If a reader can read the last bit of a word, the rhyming part- “ug”, he can add the first letter easily to form the word- “j” + “ug”. This skill is called blending- blending one part of a word with a new sound to form a new word.

I have made available 5 rhyming mats, one for each vowel as a freebie today(pictured above). Simply cut the pictures and fit it to the correct mat. Make it reusable by laminating the mats and picture cards. To make it travel friendly, add Velcro dots to the mats and the cards.
