This muffin tin spelling game is super fun and a great way to practice spelling CVC, CVCC or CCVC words. It can be played individually or with more players.
You can play with foam letters(like us), letter cards or magnetic letters. You can use upper or lower case letters. You can use an egg carton of you don’t have a muffin too!
How to play(assuming two or more are playing):
One player chooses letters to add to the tin for the next player. The only rule here is that the middle row must be vowels. (Great opportunity to differentiate between vowels and consonants too).
The next player has to find words(say CVC words) by only moving the consonants around, moving downwards. He/she has to write down as many as possible. You can make your own recording sheet or use THIS one. You can use a timer if you want to make it more challenging or has a lot of players and limited time.
After that player wrote down all his/her words. He/she changes up the letters for the next player, staying with the vowel rule.
This carries on until everyone had a turn. At the end, you get a point for each word(no point for nonsense words), the one with the most points wins. Or, you can play a few rounds and then only count the points.
PS: You have to see these posts about Spelling with building blocks and CVC Dominoes. Both activities are fabulous, that is why they were added to two fab books!
For a game of CVCC or CCVC words:
Follow the vowel rule, but now you don’t move the letters around, only try and find as many words with all the letters in the muffin tin. Almost like Boggle, but the letters do not have to touch.(for older kids you can make the rule that it has to touch.) You can(or not) use one letter twice in a word, decide beforehand.
Word family knowledge comes in handy with this game too.
A fun game, right? Great for practicing those spelling words and so easy to set up!
