Letter recognition is a very important skill to teach our children at a young age. Letter recognition helps them with reading, spelling and sounding out words. Make it fun with this letter recognition word game!

Learning the letters of the alphabet is not that easy. Many times, children can recite the alphabet or recognize it on a flashcard but not retain the letter information. Or perhaps a child can write all the letters of their name but cannot identify each letter. When children are starting to learn their letters, it is important to teach them the following:
– to recognize the shape and size(how it looks- the grapheme) of the letter.
– recognizing that the shape of the letter is associated with a letter name .
– determining what sound(phoneme) corresponds to the shape(grapheme) or name of the letter.
– the ability to trace or write the letter(letter formation) with a pen/pencil in accordance with its shape and direction.
This fun word activity helps children to recognize letters, associate it with the name, identify the sound and write a word accordingly.
You will need:
- 2 sheets of Paper
- Two colored pens

How to Play:
First decide what letters you want to teach today then write them randomly on a paper each in its own circle.
The child must close their eyes and try to mark a letter. If they miss a letter they must try again until the pen made a mark on a letter.
You will then tell them what letter it is and how it sounds like, or if they know this they can tell you. Write that letter on the second paper. (You can write it and they must trace it or if they are big enough, they can try to copy it from the first paper).
Now speak about different words that starts with that letter. Choose one word that you will write down on the paper. (again, they can write it or you can write and they trace it).

You can add your own variations such as a picture book to go through and see what picture corresponds with the letter they chose or have the matching letters on a pile and they need to look for the letter that matches they one they just choose.

The possibilities are endless with this letter recognition word game and you can adapt this game to any age/ability to practice letter recognition and phoneme/grapheme awareness.
