Science this week was all about biomes. A biome is a large group of similar ecosystems, like the rainforest! We explored a few different biomes and did a fun rainforest craft project at the end of the week. Get learning about the rainforest while doing this fun craft project!

What to do:

Use the hardboard or Art panel in landscape format. Paint the top third blue, the middle a light shade of green and the bottom third a darker shade of green.

For the trees: Cut the kitchen towel rolls lengthwise in half. Make three taller trees by gluing 2 pieces of the roll together. Once the glue is dry, paint the trunks in two or three shades of brown.

Preparation

Create the leaves by cutting pieces of crinkle paper in two shades of green glued to the top of the trees in layers. (I had some translucent green plastic in our craft box, so I used some of that in between the crinkle paper.) Punch a small hole in the side of the trunks of the three taller trees and attach the green pipe cleaner. Thread the wooden beads through the pipe cleaner and attach the pipe cleaner to the next trunk. Glue the trees to the Art board, start with the three tall trees and then add the smaller trees.

Trees

For the animals: Print the templates provided. You can let the kids simply colour in the animals or you can create a layered picture. If you are only going to colour in, print the templates on white cardboard.

Preparation of pictures and setup

To make layered pictures, print the templates on normal paper. Use a piece of carbon paper and trace the background colour first. For the monkeys, trace the outline of the monkey on brown paper. Trace the tummy area on a piece of yellow paper, the mouth area on a piece of pink paper, the hair on a piece of orange paper. Outline all the pieces with a thin black marker. Cut out all the pieces and glue layers in place. Add a bit of shading with a darker brown crayon. Cut out the completed monkey.

Follow the same basic steps for all the animals. Add details using marker pens or crayons and glue eyes to all the animals. Use a small blob of glue on the back of the spider and attach a piece of string.

Print the labels on coloured cardboard and cut out. Finish your project by gluing the labels and animals into place.
