Here is a fun(and free) printable counting activity for your fruit theme/unit- fruit ten frames counting! (Psst-There is a digital version too, scroll down for details and a whole Fruit Maths Pack!)

Fruit Ten Frames pin

Young children can make sense of numbers, adding and counting with the help of visual aids like ten frames. Also see this Pumpkin Patch Ten Frames Counting out the manipulatives and writing down the numbers to make the sum is a hands-on way to get to the answer. This way, the answer will make sense too!

How to Prep this Fruit Ten Frames activity:

Simply print the free printable fruit ten frames page and laminate it, or use a dry-erase pocket. Provide any type of counters/manipulatives- I have used fruit mini erasers and pompoms here. Grab a die or two and a dry-erase marker and you are all set!

How to Use this Fruit Ten Frames printable:

It is quite simple but super fun and can be used over and over again! Roll a die, write the number on the first circle. Count out that number of fruit/pompoms.

Roll a die again and write the second number on the second circle. Again, count out that number of fruit/pompoms.

Now count all the fruit/pompoms to get the answer, in fact, you are adding the two numbers together. Remember to use the mathematical vocabulary “adding”, “plus”, “count on”, “more” etc. when doing the activity with a child.

Write it down in the last circle. If it does happen that the answer is more than ten, it is a good opportunity to discuss how many more than the ten frame blocks will be needed to show the answer.

Not only are we working on adding here, but also number recognition, writing numbers and number sense in general. The concept of a “sum” is also visually shown well in this printable and physically “making” the sum using the manipulatives within the ten frames, is very effective.
