Reuse an old trellis and turn it into a beautiful, rustic farmhouse style advent calendar and card holder! Pretty farmhouse Christmas decor.

I had this trellis in my storeroom, mocking me, for almost 5 years! I just could not decide what to do with it! Then, with Christmas coming up, I had this idea of turning it into an advent calendar and card holder!

How to make

Lightly paint the trellis with the dry brushing method: add a little paint on the brush, then brush it a few times onto newspaper to get most of the paint off. Lightly brush long strokes across the wood.

Do the same with the wooden circle pieces and add numbers to them. These numbers can be wooden numbers or you can simply paint them.

Attach the numbers to pegs or wooden clothespins. These can be covered with Washi tape if you wish.

The idea is to change the advent “packaging” each year to give the trellis a new look. Last year we had Pretty Paper Bags as an advent calendar. It could work on this trellis too. But for this year, I decided on organza bags and round advent cards:

Here is our program for December, unfortunately, it is in Afrikaans, but here is a printable alternative, if you want some ideas!

I will have to take some of our bags with us while we are away for the holidays, but these bags are small enough to easily be added to our luggage. This, together with the Kid-made advent bags the kids made will have a fun countdown to Christmas!

A pretty, rustic farmhouse-style calendar and there is space for Christmas cards too! Now the trellis can stop bugging me!

What do you think about this farmhouse-style advent calendar? Pretty right?

What a crafty idea and it looks so elegant. It would look perfect in our house. Plus it looks like something you could decorate with other times of the year too.
