Make these frugal but fabulous spelling tools- cardboard roll words!
All you need is some cardboard rolls(I used a kitchen towel roll and toilet paper rolls) and colour paper(or paint if you’d rather paint the rolls):
I covers the long roll in white paper.
Then, I cut the TP rolls in half and strips of colour paper to go around the tubes. Green for consonants, red for vowels and yellow for digraphs.
We are working on the ‘ck’ digraph at them moment so that was the on,y one I wrote on the yellow roll. I will add the other digraphs as we go.
I randomly wrote consonants on the green rolls, and ended up to make 3 rolls, but one can do more too.
The TP rolls fit over the long cardboard roll and gets turned around to spell words. This works well for phoneme manipulation. (Yes and sometimes you get funny words, but we just breeze over it, not making a big deal, lol!)
The adult can manipulate the letters and let the child say the word or the child could manipulate with instructions(find the “d”, then the “e”, then the “ck”, what does it spell? Now change the vowel to a “o”. What does it say now?
These cardboard roll word spelling tool is not just frugal, but fun to use and great for fidgety learners too!
