DIY Reading Helper

Practicing reading is more fun with this DIY reading helper. Instead of using a boring old finger – make it exciting!

I have 3 boys under 7, so we are learning to read in full force at home. Whether we’re spelling out sight words or reading a beginners book, this little tool comes in handy. I’ve noticed that my kids use this without a fight, whereas when we were using a finger, it would be “too much effort,” as my 6 year old told me once.

Just as an extra, I would like to mention that we use Jolly Phonics as our main source to teach phonics, blending, sight words, etc; and we use Free Kids Books to download books for my kids, they have books for toddlers right up to young adults.

You will need:

• Popsicle Sticks
• Pipe Cleaners (Optional – just to look cute – use yarn for hair instead as an alternative)
• Glue Gun
• Googly Eyes (Optional – you can draw on your own face)
• Paint or Markers (Optional – you can leave it uncolored)

If you want your reading helper to be colored, then paint or color your popsicle sticks first. Once dry, use your glue gun to stick on eyes (any amount) or draw them on – and then add the pipe cleaners or yarn (use it as a scarf or hair). Let it dry.

Use this DIY reading helper to spell out words and to guide the reader to not loose his/ her space when reading.
PS: They make great bookmarks too!

This is a great opportunity to get creative with your readers. It adds a little fun and color to their day. They can name it too if they like. My 6 year old named his red one, Fizzles. We wish you success on your reading journey with your new DIY reading helper!
