How we love a challenge! Sarah from Little Bins for Little Hands set a challenge for us to play with uncoloured rice. The idea is to provide the rice(sensory material) and let your kids decide how they want to play.
Here is how we played(outside, early morning, so excuse the PJ pics):
They first explored with their hands, no other items. Note how they use their tactile sense to discover and explore. W(15 months) were fascinated by these tiny things that sort of stick to his hands. Note how he is picking it up with a pinching grasp, practicing those fine motor muscles.
I asked L what can we get to play. She decided plates, a whole stack of them, and threw the rice on the plates. Auditory exploration here because it makes an interesting sound. Then she decided to get their eating utensils drawer, yes the whole thing, and they had fun scooping, pouring, messing and tasting too!
She decided the cars need to be brought outside too. W liked the scooping and pouring(and eating) bit better.
We left/forgot the bin outside, and when I went to get it the next day, this is what I’ve found: rocks hiding in the bin! Must be W work;) And yes, it got a tad wet, so while I’m typing the rice is in the oven to dry out, and then we’ll be colouring it, see how here.
